A victorious call to arms, a spine-breaking headbanger, a bouncy disco pop banger and an, erm, sea shanty with death growl interlude. Surprised? Nah. This is Avatar dude. Undisputed kings of the indescribable and indestructible. Ringmasters of the genre smashing, ear splitting circus of carnage and chaos that they have created and curated. Then fired forwards in pretty much every conceivable musical form from their gnarly extreme metal roots to what can best be described as doo-wop. ‘Don’t Go In The Forest’ ain’t our first Avatar rodeo, what with it being their tenth studio album an’ all. But this is one of our faves. Johannes’ voice tackles everything – smooth commercial for the title track, piano ballad (‘Howling At The Waves’) and trademark yelling-through-barbed-wire-furball. Often backed by big, bold and (on occasion) bonkers guitars and beats which are always monumental, technical and pretty much a masterclass in how to play. This album is everything – because it has everything. If you’re reading this there’s a fair chance you’re one of those folk who, if told NOT to do something – do it. So in the forest we go friends. Yer girl’s leading the way…
