Wild Oceans
The Optimist
Self Released
Out on May 8!!!
Our Fave Exeter Rockers™ have released their debut EP, so if you’re not a fan of sea-related superlatives, best look away now. Because ‘The Optimist’ roars with waves of alt indie rock sounds. Crashing guitars, lush melodies, choruses you find running around in your head when you wake at 3am, and then for the rest of the following week. Each song is a story in itself, filled with emotions, experience and an intensity that makes these five tracks utterly absorbing. ‘Bloodbath’ emerges from its short, sharp shock of a suspenseful start into a colossal track that’s not shy of changing tempo and shaking things up. Wild Oceans have a knack of making you pay attention - or hitting rewind if you’re not. ‘Pieces’ is a little more mellow but no less striking. The bassline in melodious, melancholic ‘The Fear’ is a song in itself. The lyrics in ‘Hamburg’ cut close to the bone, while the music soars from breezy to thunderous and back – the drums fittingly like a quickening guilty heartbeat. Brand new track ‘Breathe’ is described by the band as a ‘semi-psychedelic Radiohead/Pink Floyd/Fleetwood Mac rock adventure’, and we’re here for it. It’d be nice and poetic to say ‘The Optimist’ ebbs and flows, but that would also be complete bollocks, because it’s constantly at a peak. Wild Oceans’ debut EP is perfection.
